Ban cyclists at night?

I've got a real bone to pick with a certain group of people who seem to think they own the road.  I'm talking about cyclists, especially those who ride at night. I've lost count of the number of times I've had near misses because they come out of nowhere, no lights, no safety gear, nothing! It's bad enough during the day, but at night? and it will be me who gets blamed if their is an accident.

It's not just me they're putting at risk either. They're endangering themselves too! Darting through traffic, sneaking up on the inside of a large vehicle, ignoring traffic signals... it's sheer lunacy! I used to think it was just a handful of irresponsible individuals but lately, I swear it's become an epidemic.

And don't get me started on their attitudes! They yell and gesture at you as if you're the one in the wrong! I've even had a few occasions where they've accused me of nearly running them over when they're the ones jumping red lights and ignoring road rules.

I hate to make assumptions, but it's hard not to wonder if some of these night-time cyclists are up to no good. It's a perfect way to go unnoticed, after all.

So, what do you guys think? Should we be pushing for a ban on night-time cycling, at least in city centres? Or am I overreacting?

Dom

I completely agree with you! It's like they're invisible until they're right in front of your car. It's a nightmare! Something needs to be done about this.

I see your point, but aren't we generalising here? Not all cyclists are like this. Some of us do follow traffic rules and use lights at night.

Mathew

@toryboy you might be one of the good ones, but the bad ones ruin it for everyone. That's the problem.

I think it's not about banning cyclists (that would be impossible) but about enforcing stricter rules and regulations for them, especially at night.

Greg

I'm a cyclist and I think you're blowing this out of proportion. Drivers can be equally irresponsible!

Dom

How about compulsory high-visibility gear and lights for all cyclists at night? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

that's actually a great idea. But who's going to enforce this?
